Themes
Prejudice Prejudice is what this novel is based off of. It is what prompted the shooting in Oak Creek that led to this incredible story. The authors used this novel to prove to their readers that racial and religious prejudices are still all too common in the world today and they challenge their readers to show kindess and compassion instead of hate.

Empathy The novel discusses many times the importance of empathy. In order to eradicate hate, people must learn to understand others and to empathize them. Although every person is different, we are all still human and are still able to connect on some level. If we can "see ourselves in the other", then hate will be no more.

ForgivenessOne of the largest themes in the book is forgiveness. Pardeep had to learn to forgive the shooter ,and those like him, for what he had done. Arno had to learn to forgive himself for committing so many of the acts that Pardeep was trying to forgive. Together, they learned that forgiveness is always possible and that together they could spread awareness and begin to fight against hate.
